Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said a man fired the shots at his wife but failed to hit her.
One of the shots hit a bodyguard, who suffered severe injuries, before the suspect fled the scene.
Hussein said the incident occurred at 1.30am at the airport’s arrival hall.
“The man actually wanted to fire the shots at his wife who was there waiting for the arrival of umrah pilgrims,” he said in a statement.
A manhunt has been launched for the suspect, who has been identified.
Hussein said the motive is still being investigated while the case is being probed for attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code.
“The situation at KLIA is safe and under control,” he said.
