PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an inquiry into a property government-linked investment company (GLIC) over allegations of abuse of power involving a “very senior official”.

MACC special operations division senior director Azmi Kamaruzaman said the Pelaburan Hartanah Bhd (PHB) official is alleged to have enjoyed hundreds of thousands of ringgit in benefits by abusing his position.

Azmi said the individual allegedly caused PHB to spend more than it was supposed to on those benefits.

“The official allegedly misled the company into giving (benefits) that were beyond what they were entitled to,” he told FMT, adding that MACC received a tip-off on the matter.

Nonetheless, he maintained that the case was not an investigation yet but simply an “inquiry”.

MACC officers also paid PHB’s headquarters a “visit” to verify the information they received, seizing several files after spending three hours there.

Azmi said they needed to confirm several matters before deciding whether to summon the senior official and others for questioning.

“If we find that there is a case then we will proceed to the next step,” he said.

Established in 2006, PHB is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Yayasan Amanah Hartanah Bumiputera, which comes under the Prime Minister’s Department.

The company was formed to boost Bumiputera participation in owning prime commercial property assets in the country.
