PETALING JAYA:
A man has been detained for attempting to carry out data phishing via SMS from a vehicle parked by the roadside to send phishing SMS to active mobile phone line users in the area.
He was detained in a joint operation by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the police in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Bernama reported.

Officials seized communications equipment, including mobile phones, GSM blaster, antenna transceiver and a laptop connected to the vehicle, which are believed to have been used by the suspect to send SMS messages to deceive phone users.

MCMC said in a statement that a phone company had identified the suspect’s activities. The company used a spectrum analysis of broadcast by communications equipment which had also caused disruption to the network service quality.

Anyone who comes across suspicious vehicles containing communications equipment like that used by the suspect should report directly to MCMC or the police, the statement said.
