KUALA LUMPUR:
An assistant superintendent of police was arrested last Thursday for allegedly being involved in an extortion case involving RM5,000 in cash in an incident at a restaurant in Bukit Bintang here on March 14.

Dang Wangi police chief Sazalee Adam said an investigation was launched after a man lodged a police report, claiming that the suspect had handcuffed his colleague, threatened him, and demanded money.

He said that in the incident, which occurred at Jalan Angsoka at about 1.30am, the complainant’s colleague was allegedly detained by the suspect on the grounds that their employer was wanted for suspected involvement in scam syndicate activities in Cambodia and China.

“The complainant, who went to the scene, found that his colleague had been handcuffed for nearly an hour. He claimed he was forced to hand over RM5,000 in cash to the officer at the restaurant for his colleague to be released,” he said in a statement today.

Sazalee said the suspect has been remanded for four days until Tuesday to assist in the investigation under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion.
