Aaron-Wooi Yik stun defending champs to enter BAC final

National men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik defied the odds to reach the final at the Badminton Asia Championships by defeating China’s top pair, Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang, on their home turf this evening.

Despite the vociferous home crowd rooting for the defending champions in Ningbo, China, the Malaysian pair won 21-12, 21-14 in a match that lasted 31 minutes.

It was their third victory in 11 encounters.

Aaron-Wooi Yik are world No 6 while their Chinese opponents are ranked No 3.

In the final tomorrow, Aaron-Wooi Yik will play China’s Chen Bo Yang-Liu Yi, who defeated Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando- Bagas Maulana 11-21, 21-11, 21-12.

The Malaysians are on track to end their title drought since November last year when they clinched the Korea Masters title. It is also their first final appearance for this year.

The winners in the final tomorrow will take home US$37,000 (RM163,716) while the runners-up will pocket US$17,000 (RM75,213).

In the BAC format, the champions will also receive a gold medal each, the runners-up a silver medal each, while both losing semi-finalists will be awarded bronze medals.
