PETALING JAYA:
The Kuching High Court has ordered a former storekeeper to be jailed for six months for installing a hidden camera in a toilet at his former workplace, setting aside a RM3,000 fine imposed by a lower court.

Justice Leonard David Shim ordered the 38-year-old man’s prison sentence to commence today and for the RM3,000 the convict paid to be refunded, Dayak Daily reported.

In November, the man pleaded guilty in the Kuching magistrates’ court to a charge of insulting a person’s modesty. He was slapped with a RM3,000 fine, or six months in prison in default.

The prosecution appealed the decision, saying the fine was inadequate as installing the camera was a premeditated act that violated the rights of individuals, especially that of women, and the man’s colleagues.

The man had committed the offence around midnight on July 1, 2023, at the office of a company in Muara Tabuan Light Industrial Park on Jalan Setia Raja in Kuching.
