KUALA LUMPUR:
Kijal assemblyman Razali Idris has withdrawn his appeal against his sedition conviction and RM2,000 fine for making inflammatory statements during a speech on the Kemaman by-election campaign trail three years ago.

His lawyer, Shahril Nizam Amin, told the High Court here that Razali instructed him to withdraw the notice of appeal filed on Jan 5.

Justice Azhar Abdul Hamid asked whether the Bersatu assemblyman was aware that this meant his conviction would remain, to which Shahril Nizam replied: “That’s right, my client is aware of that.”

Deputy public prosecutor Wan Ahmad Hijrah Wan Abdullah did not object to the withdrawal of the appeal.

On Jan 5, the sessions court here imposed a fine of RM2,000 on Razali and ordered him to serve three months in prison if he failed to pay the fine.

The Terengganu executive councillor paid the fine.

On Nov 24, 2023, Razali claimed trial to using seditious words when claiming that the decision of a court case was controlled by the government.

The former Bersatu information chief was charged with committing the offence at Padang Astaka Chukai in Kemaman, Terengganu, between 9.30pm and 11.30pm on Nov 10, 2023.

The charge under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 carries a maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment or a fine of RM5,000 or both, if convicted.
