KUALA LUMPUR:
A homeless foreigner has been charged at the magistrates’ court here with the murder of a fellow countryman last month.

Indian national Thangaraju Subbiah, 53, told the court that he understood the charge after it was read out in Tamil.

No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the High Court’s purview.

Thangaraju is accused of murdering the victim, known only as Paleni, at Jalan Lang Kuning in Kepong on March 17.

The offence under Section 302 of the Penal Code is punishable by the death penalty or between 30 and 40 years in prison.

Magistrate Aina Azahra Arifin placed Thangaraju, who was unrepresented, under police remand until the conclusion of his case.

She fixed June 10 for mention after deputy public prosecutor Hench Goh told the court they were waiting for the victim’s post-mortem report.
