PETALING JAYA:
Consumer activist Jacob George, who passed away on March 24 of a heart attack at the age of 69, will be remembered by his family as a man who gave voice to the voiceless.

George, who was the president of the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, often spoke on issues others avoided and chose to speak up even though keeping silent would have been easier, his youngest son, Lakshman Jacob, said.

“For those who did not have the power to speak up, he became their voice. He was fearless,” the 29-year-old told FMT.

Lakshman cited the time his father drove to Kedah in January to help a woman whose 16-year-old daughter had been detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012.

The teenager was subsequently released.

Over the decades, George, who was born in Sungai Petani, spoke fearlessly about hidden hands and middlemen who manipulated food prices as well as raised concerns about the plight of farmers and food security.

Yet, for the family, George’s outspokenness was nothing “extraordinary”.

“It was simply who he was,” Lakshman said.

Lakshman said that following his father’s passing, he received numerous text messages from strangers whose lives George had touched.

“They shared how he had helped them and was with them during difficult moments,” he said, adding that these tributes to his father’s compassion filled him with pride.

Lakshman recalled that in one of his last texts to his children, George had urged them not to worry about him.

“That was who he was, always thinking of others.”

The mother whose teenage daughter was detained under Sosma meanwhile said they were extremely grateful for George’s kindness and dedication, as well as his willingness to travel a great distance to help them in their hour of need.

“His presence, guidance, and support during the difficult time meant more to us than words can fully convey.

“Because of him, our family has found peace. We will always remember his kindness.”
