PETALING JAYA:
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook has slammed the actions of a group of mat rempit (illegal motorcycle racers) who turned the departure hall at the new terminal of Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) in Kota Bharu into a racing circuit.

Loke described the behaviour as saddening and embarrassing, saying it endangered the public and could be seen as sabotage of the state’s safety and economy.

He said the federal government had spent nearly RM450 million upgrading the airport to ensure better air connectivity for Kelantan.

“It is also meant to serve as a catalyst for the socio-economic development of the people of Kelantan and to attract more tourists to the state,” he said in a Facebook post.

Loke said he had instructed the director of enforcement at the Kelantan road transport department to carry out large-scale enforcement operations in the area.

“I have also asked the Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd management to tighten entry and exit routes to the terminal building to curb this problem,” he added.

A social media post showing the antics of the mat rempit at LTSIP went viral over the weekend.

The airport became fully operational on March 16 following expansion works.
