PETALING JAYA:
National men’s doubles pairs Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun suffered shock defeats in their opening matches at the Badminton Asia Championships tonight.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin, ranked world No 7, went down 22-24, 21-18, 11-21 in 63 minutes to world No 55 pair Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn-Worrapol Thongsa-Nga of Thailand at the Olympic Sports Centre in Ningbo, China.

Sze Fei-Izzuddin, who won the Indonesia Masters in January, found it difficult to break through the strong defence of their younger opponents in their first-ever meeting.

Earlier, compatriots Wei Chong-Kai Wun, ranked world No 6, fell 21-18, 21-18 to China’s world No 173 pair He Ji Ting-Ren Xiang Yu in a 45-minute match.

With their defeats, only Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik remain to carry Malaysia’s hopes in the men’s doubles event.

The men’s singles category was left with no Malaysian representative after Justin Hoh, ranked world No 40, narrowly lost 19-21, 21-14, 18-21 to Indonesia’s world No 14 Alwi Farhan after a 73-minute battle.

Earlier, Leong Jun Hao was eliminated by Indonesia’s top singles player, Jonatan Christie, in straight games.

In the women’s singles event, Goh Jin Wei found world No 9 Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan too strong for her, losing 12-21, 15-21 in just 31 minutes.

This leaves K Letshanaa as the only Malaysian in the category, after Wong Ling Ching lost to India’s PV Sindhu.

Women’s doubles debutants Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, who advanced to the main draw after winning two qualifying matches yesterday, lost 8-21, 16-21 to Taiwan’s top pair Hsieh Pei Shan-Hung En Tzu.
