Shop manager fined RM3,000 for selling medicine without prescription

Hui Jun Seng was found to have sold a box of ‘Hovasc 10mg’, which was confirmed to contain amlodipine, a product that needs a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

A shop manager was fined RM3,000 by the Kota Kinabalu sessions court today for selling a product containing a controlled substance in 2024.

Hui Jun Seng, 34, pleaded guilty to the charge before judge Zaini Fishir, the Daily Express reported.

The offence was committed on Feb 14, 2024, at Public Chemist (Sabah) Sdn Bhd on Jalan Pantai, Kota Kinabalu, where Hui sold the product without a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

Hui was found to have sold a box labelled “Hovasc 10mg” containing 10 white tablets, which were confirmed to contain amlodipine, a poison listed under the First Schedule of the Poisons Act 1952.

The medicine is usually prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Hui was charged under Section 21(1)(c) of the Poisons Act for selling controlled medicine without a prescription from a registered medical practitioner.

The offence carries a fine of up to RM3,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both.
