PETALING JAYA:
Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has offered a RM5,000 reward for information to help track down a Pakistani detainee who escaped from Sungai Buloh prison.

Lim said it was unacceptable that the prisoner was still at large one week after his escape during a transfer on April 9.

“To assist in bringing this fugitive back into custody, I am offering a reward of RM5,000 for credible information leading to his arrest,” he said in a statement.

The DAP MP also said the incident was not a minor lapse but pointed to a “serious breakdown” in basic security.

“How does a detainee in full custody simply run off during a transfer? How is such a lapse even possible in a high-security environment?

“Who was responsible? Why is there still no clear explanation after seven days? Enough delay. Enough uncertainty,” he said.

Lim also said public safety had been compromised and that this failure must be fully explained, with those responsible held accountable.

The prisons department said on April 10 that it was working with the police and other security agencies to track down Muhammad Hassan, 24.

The department said the man escaped from police custody as he was being transferred to prison after completing court proceedings at the Shah Alam courthouse. He faces charges related to sexual offences involving a child as well as immigration offences.

On April 13, Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said the incident was being investigated for negligence or possible breach of SOP, with statements recorded from policemen and prison officers as well as other detainees who witnessed the escape.

Police tightened border checks and the manhunt was scaled up with help from the General Operations Force and the police’s internal security and public order department, among others.

The prisons department is also examining the authenticity and source of CCTV footage that has gone viral on social media, allegedly showing the detainee escaping from police custody at the Sungai Buloh prison compound.

In the video, a man is seen fleeing immediately after getting down from a lorry and being chased by several policemen.
