PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has started a probe into a person suspected of uploading false content on TikTok involving the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and its chief commissioner, Azam Baki.

In a statement, MCMC said the person had his statement recorded to assist in the investigation.

“The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum penalty of a RM500,000 fine, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both, upon conviction,” MCMC said.

The commission also said that a communication device believed to have been used to upload the content had also been seized.

MCMC said it viewed seriously any misuse of social media and digital platforms intended to mislead the public through the spread of false information.

“Firm enforcement action will be taken against any person found to have breached existing laws,” it added.

The commission also advised the public to act responsibly when using social media and digital platforms, and not to abuse communication tools to upload or disseminate content that could undermine social harmony and public order.
