Rafizi to decide on forming new party in June

The former PKR deputy president says he will make his decision after discussions with his political friends as it would have an impact on them at parliamentary and divisional levels.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said he will decide on forming a new political party within the next two months, adding it would not be a unilateral decision.

The Pandan MP said he is still looking into the best way to push for reforms, whether within the party or outside of it.

“I promised friends that I would make a decision in June after discussing with them,” he told reporters after attending an anti-Azam Baki rally here.

“My decision will have an impact on my friends at the Parliament and division level. Hence it is something that we need to assess together. This isn’t about being power hungry, we just want to see changes.”

Rafizi’s ties with the PKR leadership turned frosty after he failed to be re-elected as deputy president last May; he has been publicly critical of the government and the party ever since.

He recently claimed that PKR was seeking to force a by-election in his constituency, after multiple calls were made for him to resign over his criticism of the government and the party.

Rafizi has hinted at leaving PKR after Parliament is dissolved and defending his Pandan seat, although he has dismissed forming a new party or joining a “third force”.

Earlier this month he survived an attempt to remove him as Pandan PKR chief at the division’s annual general meeting. About 42 division members voted against the motion to sack or suspend him as Pandan PKR chief – just eight more than the 34 who were for it.
