PETALING JAYA:
Former Johor Bersatu associate wing chief Tan Lek Khang, who accidentally shot himself in the chest on Tuesday, is recovering in the intensive care unit of Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru after undergoing surgery.

Tan’s office said he was in stable condition after a four-hour surgery.

“He is now warded in ICU for further monitoring,” it said in a statement, adding that only Tan’s immediate family members were allowed to visit him for now.

He was taken to hospital on Tuesday afternoon after the incident occurred during firearms training at a shooting range in Kota Tinggi, Johor.

Tan resigned from Bersatu on Feb 13 following Hamzah Zainudin’s sacking as party deputy president, citing a loss of confidence in party president Muhyiddin Yassin’s leadership.

He contested the Bekok state seat in Johor in the 2022 state election but only managed to secure 2,881 votes in the four-cornered contest.

Barisan Nasional’s Tan Chong won the seat with 7,036 votes, securing a 3,569-vote majority over Pakatan Harapan’s M Kanan.
