PETALING JAYA:Police arrested a 61-year-old man this evening over a signage bearing the word “Allah” on the wall of a shrine behind his hardware shop in Seriab, Kangar.

The arrest follows a police report lodged earlier today by Kangar Umno Youth chief Saiful Fariddil Jasmi. He also posted a video clip in which he is seen to be reprimanding a man.

District police chief Yusharifuddin Yusop said the suspect is being detained for an investigation into wounding religious feelings and insulting behaviour.

“In the meantime, we hope the public will remain calm and stop making assumptions or provocations. Let the police handle this matter,” he said in a statement.

This incident comes about a month after a shrine in Jasin, Melaka, was found with the word “Allah” and another Islamic term written on its wall.

The shrine was demolished following an agreement reached between the landowner and the authorities. Sacred items from the shrine were relocated to a different site after the landowner completed religious rites.
