PETALING JAYA:
Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh today denied claims by MCA president Wee Ka Siong that Putrajaya failed to fulfil its promise to offer matriculation places to SPM students who score 10As, describing the allegation as baseless and defamatory.

Wong said checks by the ministry found that the students in all 11 cases cited by Wee had already received offers earlier.

“One of the students had already been offered a place during the first announcement on April 27. The other 10 students received notification of their matriculation offers on April 29 at approximately 11.01am,” he said in a Facebook post.

He said the issue arose because some students obtained 10As only after a recheck of their SPM results, and the data had not been finalised at the time of the initial announcement.

A total of 286 such students were also notified of their matriculation offers via SMS on April 29.

On May 2, Wee urged the government to immediately admit 11 SPM top scorers who were allegedly “overlooked” despite a promise of automatic matriculation placement.

Wee, the Ayer Hitam MP, said MCA Youth received complaints from the students, asking how such omissions could occur under an automatic system, and called on the government to rectify the issue.

Wong insisted that the government had not broken its promise, saying the automatic admission policy for 10A students into the matriculation programme was carried out as pledged.
