Construction worker Romjan Ali pleaded guilty during separate proceedings at the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court to using criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of five women.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The High Court here increased a Bangladeshi man’s jail sentence from six months to 18 for using criminal force with intent to outrage the modesty of five women, including a German national.

Justice Aslam Zainuddin handed down the sentence on Romjan Ali, 41, after the case came up for revision today.

The construction worker was also ordered to receive one stroke of the cane.

The court ordered his sentence to take effect from April 27, the date of his arrest.

Aslam also set aside the RM15,100 fine imposed by the lower courts.

Last week, Romjan pleaded guilty in the magistrates’ courts to five charges of sexually assaulting four local women and a foreign tourist at various MRT and LRT stations here between April 10 and 25.

The courts sentenced him to concurrent jail terms ranging from three weeks to six months, along with a total fine of RM15,100.

Deputy public prosecutor Faridah Nurdinie Bahrum urged the court to enhance Romjan’s custodial sentence on grounds that sexual assault is a serious offence.

However, his lawyer, Radzuan Ibrahim, pleaded for the court to maintain Romjan’s sentences so that he could complete them and be deported to his home country.
