“The speaker’s office just received notification from the PN chief whip’s office regarding the appointment of the Kemaman MP as opposition leader this morning,” it said in a brief statement.
On Saturday, PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan announced that the coalition’s Supreme Council had appointed Samsuri as the new opposition leader during a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
Samsuri succeeds Hamzah Zainudin, who was sacked from Bersatu in February amid a leadership tussle with party president Muhyiddin Yassin.
On April 12, Samsuri said Hamzah was no longer the opposition leader and that he had instructed Takiyuddin to send an official letter informing Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul of the vacancy.
However, Johari was later reported as saying he had yet to be informed of Hamzah’s resignation.
In February, Samsuri was appointed PN chairman to replace Muhyiddin, who resigned from the post.
It was also agreed that PAS would assume the role of opposition leader in Parliament.
