Authorities probing alleged sewage discharge in Perhentian waters

Tourism exco member Razali Idris says his office was told the wastewater has been treated according to established standards, but the matter is still under review.

PETALING JAYA:
Authorities in Terengganu are investigating two video clips filmed by a diver, showing a pipe beneath a jetty near a resort on Perhentian Island discharging what appeared to be sewage directly into the sea.

Terengganu tourism, culture, environment, and climate change committee chairman Razali Idris told FMT he was notified of the video clips and is seeking a detailed report from the involved parties.

“Based on the initial information received, the discharge seen in the video is said to be wastewater treated according to established standards, but the matter is still under review.

“The state government takes issues that could harm the environment and the state’s tourism image very seriously. If there are any violations of regulations, appropriate action will be taken,” he told FMT.

The video clips, which went viral on the Threads social media platform, showed a pipe discharging murky-coloured wastewater into the sea.

The Threads user, who posted the video clips, reminded divers on the island to be careful.

When contacted, the resort’s management said it operates a treatment plant to process wastewater before it is discharged.

“The discharge shown in the video involved treated wastewater and was part of a temporary arrangement while modification works were being carried out,” Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa said in a statement to FMT.

It also expressed a continued commitment to responsible environmental stewardship and to preserving the natural beauty of Perhentian Island for all guests, associates, and the local community.
