MELAKA:
Flights between Melaka and Pekanbaru, Sumatra, will resume on June 10, a state executive councillor said.

Tourism, heritage, arts and culture committee chairman Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman said Indonesian low-cost carrier Wings Air, which is part of the Lion Air Group, will operate three flights a week – on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays – from Melaka International Airport at Batu Berendam.

Razak said the service is expected to contribute to an increase in arrivals from Indonesia, particularly in the medical tourism subsector.

“I have been informed that about 50% of the passengers on these flights will be tourists seeking treatment or health screenings at the four private hospitals in Melaka.

“The private hospitals are the preferred choice for many Indonesians because we have numerous specialist doctors, as well as advanced medical facilities,” he told reporters after the Riuh Ria @ Banda Hilir 2026 programme here last night.

He said the state government is holding discussions with several other airlines to open routes to destinations from Melaka International Airport.

Razak also said the Melaka-Singapore service operated by Scoot, the low-cost subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, has been receiving encouraging response, with about 85% passenger capacity on each flight.
