PETALING JAYA:
A woman pleaded guilty at the Johor Bahru sessions court today to culpable homicide not amounting to murder after causing the death of one of her newborn twin daughters by throwing the infant from the 10th floor of a flat last month.

Nuran Batrisya Jamaludin, 22, nodded when the charge was read before judge Zamir Suhaimee, Kosmo reported.

According to the charge sheet, the unmarried woman was accused of causing the death of the baby girl by acting with the intention of causing bodily injury likely to result in death.

The offence was committed at the parking area of a People’s Housing Programme flat in Taman Sutera Utama, Johor Bahru, between 11am and 2.30pm on May 20.

Nuran Batrisya was charged under Section 304(a) of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 30 years and a fine upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor R Nevina, while Nuran Batrisya was unrepresented.

Nevina did not offer bail, saying the offence was generally non-bailable, and requested time for the preparation of case facts and sentencing.

In mitigation, however, Nuran Batrisya pleaded with the court to grant her bail, saying she needed to care for her other newborn child, the victim’s twin sibling.

The court granted bail of RM20,000 with two local sureties, ordering Nuran Batrisya to surrender her passport, report monthly to a nearby police station, and not to interfere with prosecution witnesses.

It fixed July 3 for the presentation of case facts and sentencing.
