PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry has allocated funds to upgrade the facilities in several Sabah hospitals as the state battles the third wave of Covid-19.

In a Facebook post, the ministry said these funds will be used to expand the intensive care unit (ICU) in Hospital Queen Elizabeth (HQE), Kota Kinabalu and Hospital Duchess of Kent, Sandakan.

HQE will also receive allocations to upgrade its ICU facilities, including the procurement of critical medical equipment, such as ventilators, beds and patient monitors.

“Since laboratory services are crucial, funds have also been given to prepare laboratories in Hospital Tawau’s pathology department and Hospital Lahad Datu, and also to upgrade the lab in HQE,” it said.

The ministry said there were currently 25 hospitals under the ministry in Sabah, with nine operating as hybrid hospitals specifically to treat Covid-19 patients.

It said bed usage in hybrid hospitals was only at 59% of the total capacity, although additional beds are being made ready in low-risk quarantine and treatment centres to ensure the state’s healthcare system is prepared to take in more patients.

Malaysia reported 801 Covid-19 cases and eight deaths yesterday, with seven deaths and 546 infections coming from Sabah alone.
