PETALING JAYA:
A 25-year-old college student has surrendered himself days after police said a man was wanted for statutory rape after impregnating his 16-year-old girlfriend and causing her to give birth on May 29.

The suspect, who was studying in Selangor, gave himself up at the Padang Besar district police headquarters on Saturday.

District police chief Shokri Abdullah said the police had obtained a remand order to detain the suspect until Thursday, Harian Metro reported.

“The newborn baby, delivered prematurely by the victim in Kangar, is still under medical observation,” he added.

Last week, police said a college student was being sought after a medical officer lodged a report about a secondary school student who had given birth.

An investigation revealed that the victim had sexual relations with the suspect, who was her boyfriend, in a room at Jalan Kaki Bukit, Beseri.

The victim later found herself seven months pregnant following testing at a private clinic but concealed the matter from her family and others until the baby was born.
