IWK offers targeted subsidy for sewerage services

Ensuring an effective sewerage service is essential for averting disturbances and protecting water sources from potential contamination, thereby reducing the likelihood of water-borne diseases.

IWK plays a crucial role in maintaining an efficient sewage treatment system, ensuring continuous 24-hour processes with optimal equipment functioning.
PETALING JAYA:
Up until Dec 31, 2023, Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) had been managing and operating 7,478 public sewage treatment plants and an extensive network of 20,952km of sewerage pipes.

Additionally, the company provides regular and scheduled desludging (emptying) services of individual septic tanks in Peninsular Malaysia and the Federal Territory of Labuan.

IWK takes on the crucial responsibility of maintaining an efficient and well-managed sewage treatment system, ensuring the equipment functions optimally round the clock, as sewage treatment processes continue 24 hours a day.

The company’s main role is to ensure that the wastewater treated is safe and complies with the strict standards established, before being released back into the waterways.

An efficient sewerage service is crucial in preventing nuisance whilst safeguarding water sources from potential contamination – mitigating the risk of water-borne diseases.

To ensure a sustained delivery of an efficient level of services, adjustments to the sewerage service tariff were implemented in October 2022 and will be phased in gradually until 2026.

The implementation of the sewerage tariff adjustments only involves domestic users of connected services and septic tank desludging services.

Since October 2022, IWK has been providing tangible assistance, in the form of rebates, to connected services and septic tank desludging services customers, specifically targeting economically disadvantaged customers from low-income backgrounds and the hardcore poor who are registered on the e-Kasih database system.

As at December 2023, a total of RM183,000 in rebate assistance has been given to these customers.

IWK is committed to ensuring the sewage treatment works operate consistently. However, many of the sewerage systems under IWK’s care have been in service for a long time.

This leads to obsolete assets and equipment that require replacement or upgrades to ensure it continues to meet the effluent quality standards set.

Similarly, the replacement of deteriorated underground sewer pipes is essential to establish a safe flow of sewage to treatment plants, preventing potential damage or leaks that could negatively impact water resources and the environment.

IWK consistently carries out maintenance work to achieve a compliance standard of more than 97% for treated effluent released into the waterways.
