KUALA LUMPUR:
Ramadan will soon be here and while it is a month of deep reflection and fasting, the leadup to Hari Raya Aidilfitri is often dedicated to both feasts and family.

Hence, you’re likely on the lookout for great places to treat your loved ones to delicious banquets at reasonable prices.

If you’re still looking, why not drop by an exquisite restaurant in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, where the view is as good as the food.

Located on the sixth floor of the award-winning RuMa Hotel and Residences, the Santai Pool Bar and Lounge offers patrons a breathtaking view of the surrounding city.

And as its name suggests, it also affords you a view of the hotel’s infinity pool; who knows? Maybe you can go for a dip before surfacing for a quick bite?

Across the pool deck are sun-soaked lounge chairs and sofa beds, where you can enjoy your meal in the most casual manner possible.

And if you prefer something more formal, there is also a terrace meeting room where you can enjoy a conventional restaurant-like environment.

There is more to admire than just the scenery though as around this of the year, Santai is rolling out quite the feast for Ramadan.

All-time seasonal favourites, such as satay, asam laksa and rendang, will be served alongside oft-overlooked Malay delicacies such as ulam, kerabu, jeruk and keropok.

This year, head chef Mohammad Rizuwan will be preparing the dishes he recalls from his childhood, which were the same ones which set him on his path to become a culinary chef in the first place.

“The traditional preparations of the festive season will always take me back to my childhood — a reminder of the importance of family and of sharing during this special time.”

Who knew that salmon could be served in the form of ikan bakar? Surprisingly enough, the Salmon Bakar is delicious as ever, with a crispy skin concealing flavourful flesh beneath.

Same goes for the Slipper Lobster Percik, which are as juicy as they are fleshy. Don’t feel shy about making a mess of your fingers as you claw sweet, crunchy meat out of their scarlet shells.

If you are tuckered out on seafood, perhaps turn your attention to the kerabu corner.

For folks who are not acquainted with this Malay salad-like dish, you might be astounded by just how many variants there are, from vegetarian options to meatier ones.

The tangy, chewy Mangga Sotong, the savoury, crunchy Taugeh Kerang and the addictive Jantung Pisang are all lipsmacking options.

The kerabu corner also shares a spot with the ulam-ulaman section, where you can enjoy fresh vegetables and buka puasa in a healthy manner.

Aside from seafood and vegetables, there are also the classic treats that no Ramadan would be complete without.

There is plenty of satay to go around, with the all-important peanut sauce, of course. And there’s also lemang and rendang which are up to par with those sold at Ramadan bazaars.

And of course, there’s serunding – addictive shredded meat you can either enjoy on its own or with porridge or rice.

And just before you call it a night, be sure to check out the many desserts available.

From traditional goodies like kuih-muih and biscuits, there are also other desserts with a localised spin, such as the durian strudel and pandan crème brûlée.

Available from March 28 to April 20, Santai’s Ramadan buffet will be open from 6.30pm and is priced at RM218 per diner.
