PETALING JAYA:
Get ready to groove for a good cause! Sing along to songs from some of the most talented performers in Malaysia as they take the stage for an exclusive one-day-only benefit concert this weekend.

The nine-hour(!) Musicians for Musicians Malaysia Benefit Concert 2020 will see about local 100 artistes, including 20 bands, performing to raise funds for members of the local music industry who have fallen on challenging times.

Expect beloved tunes and spirited performances from renowned acts such as Jerry Arul, Datuk Leonard Tan, the Michael Veerapen Trio and Dasha Logan, NRG, and many more.

Also look out for appearances by iconic local bands from the 1970s such as Alleycats, Strollers, Sons of Adam, and Heavy Machine.

Musicians for Musicians Malaysia (MfM) vice-president Edwin Nathaniel explained that the reason the event is dated “2020” is to retain its original theme, which had been planned three years ago but had to be postponed owing to the pandemic.

“Music lovers are in for a treat. This concert is a great way to enjoy music from some of the best veteran musicians in the industry, while also supporting a good cause. Proceeds will go towards the wellbeing and welfare of needy musicians,” he explained.

The concert will be held at Menara BAC in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, from 3pm to midnight this Sunday. It is organised by MfM and supported by Memories Entertainment, with sponsors BAC, Asia Wings, and Genesis Pro Audio.

Sons of Adam is another local band scheduled to make an appearance at the concert. (Musicians for Musicians Malaysia pic)

Nathaniel added that four emcees – Simon D’Cruz, Nubert Ambrose, Radha Krishan, and Nigel Green – will be present to spice up the proceedings. Also look out for performances by Music Buddies and 5 Ways, groups comprised of friends from different bands coming together.

“It’s a concert not to be missed. Your support will go a long way, and we greatly appreciate it,” Nathaniel added.

One of the highlights is the concert’s theme song, “Pesona Harapan”, composed by Royston Sta Maria with lyrics by Mukhlis Nor (Hijau).

In a statement, Sta Maria said he’d written the song during the pandemic, and that it was dedicated to his fellow musicians, as well as all Malaysians, in the hope of a better tomorrow.

“I was moved by the plight of Malaysians who had to raise the white flag in desperation, especially our local musicians, some of whom had to sell their musical equipment just to survive,” he said.

“‘Pesona Harapan’ is about hope, it is about having faith, and that even through the bad times the sun will still shine. I am honoured to have worked with some of the best and most talented Malaysian musicians on this song.”
