KUALA LUMPUR:
They are loud, full of energy and often a little mischievous – yet irresistibly lovable all the same.

With their thick coats, striking ice-blue eyes and wolf-like features, huskies have long captured the hearts of dog lovers around the world.

But behind the charm lies a reality many may not fully realise: huskies are pretty high maintenance.

You can learn all about huskies at Husko Asia – a place where visitors can interact with the breed and better understand what owning one involves.

“With huskies, we’ve found out that most people end up abandoning them because they are high maintenance, very active and aggressive. Sometimes they can even damage furniture.

“They also need to live in an air-conditioned environment,” Oscar Ang, co-founder of Husko Asia, told FMT Lifestyle.

“Our mission is very, very simple – that those who come will gain awareness that they shouldn’t simply get a puppy if they are not ready. The dogs deserve a better life,” added Ang, 28.

By purchasing a ticket, one can spend an hour with the dogs in a comfortable indoor space. During FMT Lifestyle’s visit, about 11 dogs were there, roaming freely as guests played with them.

It did not take long for their personalities to shine through: some were eager for attention, others cheeky and full of antics while a few were content to lounge quietly.

If you’d like to capture the moment, you can even have your photos taken and framed as a keepsake.

You can also buy kibbles from the Husko Asia team to feed the canines. Be warned! A few of these furry masterminds have perfected the art of emotional blackmail. One look from those pleading eyes and you’ll be handing over treats like there’s no tomorrow.

The museum here is a small educational space that offers insights into huskies – from their anatomy to body language, characteristics and more.

According to Ang, Husko Asia officially opened last December. Today, it is home to 23 dogs, most of them huskies. Many are adopted and each has a story of its own.

Among them, Nori’s stands out. She was adopted when she was just a few months old. It is believed that she was confined to a small cage that could not accommodate her growth, resulting in injuries to her spine and pelvis that later affected her mobility.

Gravely concerned for her health, the Husko Asia team took her to a veterinary hospital, where the team was advised to put her to sleep due to her poor quality of life.

But they chose to fight for her. They ordered a wheelchair with the hope of helping her move again. But tragically, Nori passed away before it arrived.

Nori’s journey is a poignant reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership.

“I hope that when people step out of this door, they take away the message that we want to deliver: please care for and love your pets. If you’re not ready, don’t get one. You can always come here and spend an hour with the dogs.

“If you really want to have a pet, you must be ready and be responsible for them,” Ang concluded.
