MONTREAL:
Jean-Claude Lord, a leading Quebec director known for his sharp-edged social criticism, has died at 78 following a massive stroke, his son Jean-Sebastien Lord said Sunday on Facebook.

Quebec premier Francois Legault praised Lord on Twitter as “a pioneer of the cinema and television of Quebec.”

The Montreal Gazette said the director had “set a new standard for Quebec TV with the series ‘Lance et Compte,'” about the underworld of professional hockey. It aired in English as “He Shoots, He Scores.”

The Canadian province’s culture and communications minister Nathalie Roy said that that series and Lord’s children’s fantasy “La Grenouille et la Baleine” (“The Tadpole and the Whale”) had “marked many generations of Quebecers.”

Wearing many hats – as director, screenwriter, film editor and producer – Lord made more than a dozen movies, mostly in French.

Among movies targeting an Anglophone audience were horror film “Visiting Hours,” starring William Shatner, and sci-fi movie “The Vindicator” (also known as “Frankenstein ’88”).

Lord worked on several TV series still popular among Quebecers, including “District 31,” now in its sixth season.
