PETALING JAYA:
The group lobbying for Prime Minister Najib Razak’s resignation will hold events similar to the March 27 “closed-door gathering” nationwide.

Former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim told a press conference today the March 27 gathering will take place at the Shah Alam Convention Centre, between 1pm and 6.30pm.

“I was informed the Shah Alam police will take the necessary precautionary measures.

“(Former Prime Minister) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad) will deliver the opening speech.

“The purpose of the rally is to show that most Malaysians want the current administration to change.

“They want to return to an administration that’s free from corruption and abuse of power.”

He said the gathering would also aim for a healthier political environment where “the law is respected”.

According to Zaid, the number of participants at the gathering will be capped at 1,200 as that is the number of people the SACC hall can accommodate.

Zaid was also asked about the “third force” in the local political scene with the formation of the PAS- Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) alliance yesterday.

He said in Malaysia, there were only two sides – the right force and the wrong force. The former was the one which opposed Najib and the latter comprised those who supported the prime minister.

“The forces which support the Cabinet today are the groups that are opposing the truth.

“We are not the fourth force, but we are the right force.”

Zaid also lambasted Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom for his remarks earlier today about the government monitoring liberal Muslims in the country.

“He (Jamil) should be charged under Section 124 for activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy. He spoils democracy.

“He must respect the rights of Malaysians. This is the problem with Najib. He has a minister who does not understand anything. This is exactly why we want Najib to resign.”

Present at the press conference was civil rights activist Ambiga Sreenevasan, who said a town hall meeting would be held soon to explain the involvement of NGOs in the signing of the Citizens’ Declaration, which she said had elicited a backlash from various parties.
