GEORGE TOWN: Political cartoonist Zunar has been remanded for a day for police to proceed with his sedition investigation.
The remand order was produced by Sessions Court Senior Assistant Registrar Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan this morning.
Zunar’s lawyer Ramkarpal Singh Deo said the cartoonist will be investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948.
Zunar, whose real name is Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, was detained in Penang yesterday evening under the Sedition Act for insulting Prime Minister Najib Razak.
He was brought to the George Town Magistrate’s Court this morning as police sought to get a remand order for further investigation.
According to his lawyer, Ramkarpal Singh, Zunar, who was arrested for breaching the peace under the Penal Code and the Sedition Act, is expected to be released this evening.
He said that the police did not take any statement from the cartoonist despite having detained him at 6pm yesterday.
Zunar was arrested by the Northeast district police following a police report by Nibong Tebal Umno Youth chief Mohd Norhiesam Ismail.
Norhiesam said it was unacceptable for Zunar to depict national leaders like Najib in a bad light.
Zunar had earlier claimed a mob of about 30 men confronted him at his exhbition held in Komtar, here yesterday.
The mob had also allegedly destroyed some of his artwork, which was part of the George Town Literary Festival.
The exhibition was supposed to run till Sunday.
