Police query Guan Eng over son’s groping case – 6 years later

GEORGE TOWN: Lim Guan Eng was questioned by police today over a report he had lodged six years ago against an Umno blogger who had claimed the chief minister’s teenage son had molested a girl in school.

At 9.30am, two uniformed policemen from the Northeast district police headquarters met Lim at his office in Komtar. Lim’s legal officer Raja Syarafina Raja Shuib was also present.

The report falls back on a hot issue in 2011, where Lim’s then 16-year-old son was accused of groping a schoolmate’s breasts, and was later transferred to another school in Penang.

Six police reports were lodged against Lim’s son.

A collage of Lim’s son’s photograph and the victim’s photograph made its rounds after pro-Umno blogger Papagomo posted it on his blog.

Later, it was revealed that the girl in the picture was a chess player from Hong Kong named Anya Corke. The original photo, which showed Corke playing chess, had been cropped in an attempt to implicate Lim’s son.

The issue was resurrected after Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was recently asked about the case and he replied that the case was still being investigated by police.

Lim said he was surprised when two assistant superintendents of police asked him if he wanted to “proceed” with the case and take it to court.

“I said of course. If you would ask the family of Kim Jong Nam if they want to appear in court, of course, they too would say yes, right?,” he said, referring to the murder of the North Korean at klia2 recently.

“This is the third time the police are taking statements from me. Why ask this question six years later? I lodged a report on the advice of a senior police officer at that time.

“But after six years still no action. Those who insult the prime minister will be brought to court quickly but when it happens to me, still no action,” Lim told reporters in Komtar today.

Lim said his son was traumatised by the allegations hurled at him, to the extent he had not wanted to attend school at that time.

“My son did not want to go to school after that. I was worried if he would start doing silly things. Nowadays, you see children start to do silly things ( in such circumstances).

“You want to go for me, go lah, but he is an innocent child. This is clearly dirty tactics employed by pro-BN people. It is barbaric.” he claimed.

The unsubstantiated allegations against Lim’s son at that time had gone viral.

One rumour that spread fast was that Lim had offered to pay RM100,000 for each breast groped. This was carried, among others, by a blogger known as Dr MiM.

Later, it was rumoured that Lim’s son was transferred from Heng Ee School to St Xavier’s Institution due to “disciplinary” problems. The schools denied this.

“He was a prefect and has done quite well in the academic field. We did not want him to leave. Even his parents did not want him to leave but he preferred to study in another school,” a source told Malaysiakini at that time.

Later, an exclusive report in FMT revealed the groping allegations were untrue and that the person in the photos was, in fact, chess player Corke.
