PETALING JAYA: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) today appointed former Puteri Umno executive councillor Rina Mohd Harun as the head of its women’s wing.
Party president Muhyiddin Yasssin also announced Shamsilah Siru as the deputy head together with 20 central committee members and seven state-level chiefs for the wing which has been named by the party as Srikandi.
Muhyiddin, a former deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president, characterised the appointments as a vital step forward in the effort to solidify the party which was formed in August last year.
“We recognise the importance of women in PPBM in the struggle that we share with other front leaders on the single agenda to save Malaysia,” he said.
He hoped that the PPBM women leaders would be able to draw support from the people and increase the party’s membership.
Rina, who was formerly the Puteri chief of Umno’s Sepang division, said one of the main challenges her team faced was to add to the number of women in the party.
“We want our women members to invite family members and others to support PPBM,” she said.
Prior to this, there was some degree of controversy surrounding the status of the wing when PPBM supreme council member Anina Saadudin alleged in December last year that she had been expelled as its head.
PPBM information head Kamarudin Md Nor however said Anina was not dismissed from the post as the party had never officially appointed her in the first place.
In a Facebook posting on March 26 Anina called on her supporters to pledge their loyalty to the new chief, and gave her commitment to support and help the women’s wing.
