While most were largely amused, the question was also a reassurance of sorts to some that Mahathir’s Twitter account was indeed manned by the 92-year-old former prime minister himself.
ROTFLMAO stands for “rolling on floor laughing my ass off”.
It was used by Twitter user Vernon Adrian Emuang, in response to a short video clip by Mahathir.
Some tried to explain the meaning of the slang with direct translations, attempting to keep their explanations free from profanity.
A translation by Twitter user @roslanzz read: “Ketawa terbahak-bahak sampai terkincit-kincit” (Laughing so hard you wet yourself). Not the most word-perfect translation, but it gets the point across.”
Others put their own outlandish spin on the acronym, just to “troll” Mahathir, who is leading the opposition charge at the next general election.
“Rasa Orang Tak Faham Lagi Malaysian Authorities O :)” said Eric Willem (Feels like people still don’t understand Malaysian authorities).
Redzwan Sam offered another take: “Rasa Oren Terbaik From Luar Malaysia Amat Oh-sem” (The taste of the best oranges outside of Malaysia are really awesome).
