Najib launches new TV channel for Sabah and Sarawak

Najib launched TV Okey which can be viewed on Astro 109 and MyFreeview 110 platforms as well as the RTM Mobile app.

KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Najib Razak today launched a new TV channel, TV Okey, that exclusively features Sabah and Sarawak.

Speaking during the opening ceremony here, Najib said the government can better relay its messages to the rakyat in Sabah and Sarawak through this new channel.

The new channel is also set to enhance the creative industry in Sabah and Sarawak and promote new talents, he said.

“Wherever we go, we see singers, dancers, drama producers, script-writers, documentary makers and more emerging from Sabah and Sarawak,” said Najib.

“With the new channel, the airtime on Sabah and Sarawak will definitely increase. This will serve to motivate new talents.

“Malaysian talents have received international recognition from countries such as Indonesia, the United States, Mexico and more.

“Our shows like Upin and Ipin, BoBoiBoy and more are famous overseas.”

Najib said the new TV channel will be highly effective because it will be aired in the various Sabah and Sarawak dialects.

“In Sabah, there are 52 official ethnic groups while in Sarawak there are 27,” he said.

“Before, RTM aired programmes in Iban and Kadazan only twice a day while other dialects are featured only on radio.

“The new channel will feature programmes in more dialects. They will showcase Sabah and Sarawak as the best example of social cohesiveness in the country.

“What’s important is the messages on the new channel will be an expression of not only that the leaders are ‘okay’ but most importantly, the rakyat is ‘okay’.”

Federal Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak said his ministry and national broadcaster RTM were excited when the prime minister hatched the idea for a new TV channel, specifically for Sabah and Sarawak.

“The prime minister’s attention to the development of the creative industry in both states was well received by the ministry, RTM and the nation’s artistes,” he said in his speech during the launching ceremony.

Salleh said the name “TV Okey” was chosen because it was unpretentious and easy to say and remember.

“The channel’s branding uses a bottom-up approach which involves the people, including those at the grassroots,” Salleh said.

“The government has taken into account the opinions and inputs of the rakyat who have all expressed a feeling of ‘okey’ in their daily life despite the challenges and obstacles they are facing.

“In truth, in spite of all the accusations by certain quarters, who are envious of the nation’s success, we’re all okay, the nation is okay, Sabah is okay, Sarawak is okay, the chief ministers of Sabah and Sarawak are okay, and the prime minister is the most okay.”

The channel will not only be broadcast in Sabah and Sarawak but also to the whole nation so that all Malaysians can appreciate the essence and uniqueness of Sabahans and Sarawakians.

The word “okey” is an acronym for “opportunity”, “knowledge”, “experience” and “yours”, said a press statement.

The channel will be viewed on the Astro 109 and MyFreeview 110 platforms as well as the RTM Mobile app.
