Najib condemns Putrajaya over refusal to release IPIC documents

The former prime minister says Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng and his father Lim Kit Siang have spoken about the matter even after his case was brought to court.

Former prime minister Najib Razak says he has been urging the government to release the documents even before he was charged.
PETALING JAYA:
Najib Razak has rubbished Putrajaya’s excuse for not releasing documents pertaining to a 1MDB-related settlement which they claimed would be sub judice as the matter was related to his court case.

He said despite saying this, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng had continued to speak on the matter, including when tabling Budget 2019.

“And this also includes his father who continues to hurl allegations about IPIC and 1MDB,” Najib said, referring to Guan Eng’s father, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang.

Yesterday, Guan Eng said the government could not release documents pertaining to the settlement agreement between Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) and the state investment arm as doing so would be sub judice.

He said this in response to the repeated calls by the former prime minister for the Pakatan Harapan government to reveal the agreement made by Malaysia.

In a Facebook post, Najib also refuted Guan Eng’s claim that he (Najib) had only raised the matter after being charged in court.

Najib said he had urged Putrajaya to release the documents during a Dewan Rakyat sitting, prior to being charged last month.

“But at that time, Guan Eng wasn’t in the Dewan.”

Najib said it was difficult to raise the matter in the past, especially when he was the prime minister, as it also involved another country.

There is no reason to quarrel with a foreign nation, he said, if the issue could be resolved amicably.

Najib then accused the Pakatan Harapan government of not wanting to release the documents due to a clause which stated that IPIC would have to pay the sum which was said to be missing from 1MDB.

“They do not want people to know the truth about 1MDB and efforts made to recoup the money. They want to use the issue to smear my name.“

He also wondered why Putrajaya was not pushing IPIC to honour the agreement to recover the money from IPIC.

“Is it more important to have me charged in court instead of recovering 1MDB money and safeguard ties with Abu Dhabi?”
