KOTA BHARU:
The Pakatan Harapan (PH) government will ensure democracy in the country, which was severely damaged by the previous government, flourishes again, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said the PH government holds on to the principle of separation of powers of the legislative, executive and judiciary, unlike the previous administration.

“We (the government) will respect the separation of powers between the three branches, not like the previous leaders who thought they could act with impunity.

“The final arbiter is a judiciary that is free from outside influence. Before, wrongdoers were not brought to justice,” he said after a gathering with Kelantan PH leaders here today.

More than 1,000 PH leaders attended the event.

Mahathir said democracy was about giving people the freedom to choose their government and this was proven in the 14th general election (GE14).

He gave the assurance that the PH government would always be mindful of the people’s interests.

Meanwhile, Mahathir said PH was confident of wresting Kelantan in GE15 based on the support of the people in the state towards the federal government.

“From what I see, PH can take over Kelantan in GE15,” he said, adding that the Kelantan people could judge for themselves PH’s sincerity in wanting to serve them.

On the unfulfilled manifesto promises, Mahathir said the people were able to understand the situation as the new government was forced to be extremely prudent in financial matters following the huge debt left behind by the previous administration.
