Fuel subsidy for B40 still in the making, says deputy minister

Chong Chieng Jen says his ministry and the finance ministry are looking into the proposals presented to them.

KUALA LUMPUR: Putrajaya is still in the midst of formulating a fuel subsidy mechanism for the bottom 40 (B40) group, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Chong Chieng Jen said the finance ministry had already called for proposals on the best mechanism to implement the targeted subsidy.

“We take note of those living in urban and rural parts of the country, but a final decision on the mechanism to be implemented has not been made.

“Both ministries are looking into and giving careful consideration to whatever proposals are presented to us,” he said during question time.

Chong (PH-Bandar Kuching) was replying to Salim Sharif (BN-Jempol) who had asked how the targeted fuel subsidy can be utilised in rural areas with no petrol stations, and whether the card can be used across the country.

It was previously reported that the subsidy is intended for RON95 petrol in rural communities located in remote areas.

Chong earlier told the lower house that the government would give subsidies of 30 sen a litre, limited to the first 100 litres a month for cars, or 40 litres a month for motorcycles.

RM2 billion was set aside in this year’s budget for the targeted subsidy programme, which is expected to benefit four million car owners and 2.6 million motorcycle owners.
