PKR keeps mum about Nurul Izzah quitting PAC

Nurul Izzah (left) resigned when Ronald Kiandee was retained as PAC chairman after leaving BN to join PPBM.

KUALA LUMPUR: Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar’s resignation as a member of the Public Accounts Committee has yet to be discussed by her party’s political bureau, PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jayakumar said today.

He was non-committal about Nurul Izzah’s resignation, which she announced on Friday.

“We have not discussed anything. If it comes up for decision at the political bureau level, then we will discuss it,” he told Bernama. “It’s her own decision to do that (to resign) and it is done. I don’t want to comment further.”

Nurul Izzah’s resignation came after opposition MP Ronald Kiandee, chairman of PAC, left Barisan Nasional and joined PPBM of Pakatan Harapan (PH).

In announcing her decision on Twitter, Nurul Izzah said: “The chairperson of the PAC must be filled by the opposition to pursue accountability of the executive”, a key policy plank of PH.

She also said she would remind the speaker to continue reforms so that Parliament was on equal footing to the executive.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was reported today as saying that Kiandee would be replaced as PAC chairman but would remain in the post for now until a successor is found.
