GEORGE TOWN: Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy has launched a sharp attack on PPBM Youth chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman over the latter’s demand for an apology from Selangor DAP assemblyman Ronnie Liu.
Ramasamy said while PPBM leaders have reason to be angry over Liu’s remarks critical of Dr Mahathir Mohamad, issuing ultimatums and threatening to attack the DAP leadership “is something beyond comprehension”.
“If DAP leaders are going to adopt the same immature approach of Syed Saddiq, then there will be a virtual war.
“Fortunately, DAP leaders are saner and guarded in their public outbursts than the kid Saddiq,” said Ramasamy.
Liu was recently summoned to DAP’s disciplinary board over his recent criticism of Mahathir, in the wake of speculations of a “political realignment”.
Ramasamy today expressed sympathy with Liu.
“Liu might be a maverick in many ways, but a great fighter against injustice in society. He has good support among party members. The DAP needs him,” he said.
He said while the decision was a party procedure, Liu had only exercised his freedom of speech.
“In the case of Liu, the party might find it difficult to say what (remarks) are permissible and what was not.
“A delicate balancing act is needed to safeguard democracy in the party, the right to dissent and most importantly to ensure that party decisions are not seen antithetical to wishes of party members,” he wrote on Facebook.
Ramasamy added that Liu had likely acted out of concern for Pakatan Harapan’s survival.
