PONTIAN:
The Election Commission (EC) is expecting a voter turnout of 70% for the Tanjung Piai by-election.

At a press conference at the Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim here today, EC chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said he hoped voters will come out and exercise their right and fulfil their responsibilities.

“The EC also urges all parties, especially the media, to play a role in encouraging voters to come out to vote on Nov 16.”

He added they were working with all relevant parties to prepare for possible floods on voting day.

“We have prepared pumps and we have prepared lorries to bring voters to voting stations. Boats have also been prepared and all security preparations have been made to overcome such a problem.”

The Tanjung Piai by-election was triggered by the death of its incumbent, PPBM’s Dr Md Farid Md Rafik, who won it by 524 votes in a three-way contest against BN and PAS candidates.

The by-election for the parliamentary seat will see a six-cornered fight involving Pakatan Harapan’s Karmaine Sardini, BN’s Wee Jeck Seng, Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam, Berjasa’s Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz and independents Ang Chuan Lock and Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar.
