PPBM only has Mahathir and no successor, says Umno

Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin says he expects most PPBM members, made up largely of 'party hoppers', to also quit after Mahathir steps down.

Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin says there is no one capable of keeping PPBM intact after the prime minister is gone.
PONTIAN:
Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin said PPBM is seen as a strong party today mainly because its chairman, Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the prime minister.

He added that once Mahathir stepped down, PPBM will not have any successor and its members can be expected to quit.

Addressing a crowd of fishermen in Kukup during Barisan Nasional’s Tanjung Piai by-election campaign trail, Khaled said once Mahathir is no longer around, the next prime minister will not come from PPBM.

Khaled said most of the PPBM members now were just “party hoppers”.

“They will hop after PPBM dies. There is no one who is capable of keeping PPBM intact after the prime minister is gone.”

PPBM was formed in August 2016 after Umno expelled Muhyiddin Yassin, who was its deputy president and deputy prime minister. Muhyiddin is now PPBM president.

Six candidates, namely Barisan Nasional’s Wee Jeck Seng, Pakatan Harapan’s Karmaine Sardini, Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam, Berjasa’s Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz, as well as independent candidates Ang Chuan Lock and Faridah Aryani Abd Ghaffar are contesting in the Tanjung Piai by-election.

The Election Commission said Tanjung Piai has 52,978 registered voters and they expect a 70% turn-out on Nov 16.
