Students held in rape probe to be allowed to sit for exam

Cops say case solved, seven to be freed on police bail.

The remand of the seven students ends tomorrow.
TAWAU:
Seven students arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a 14-year-old schoolgirl will be freed on police bail tomorrow after their remand order expires.

Tawau district police chief Peter Umbuas said police regarded the case as solved and did not intend to further remand the 17-year-old students.

‘’Since they will be sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, we will free them on police bail first,” he said, adding that the alleged victim had undergone an examination in hospital.

He said police would complete their investigation papers, and charges would be levelled against the students if there was strong evidence.

It was reported yesterday that seven male students at a school in Tawau had been remanded for three days over the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl at the same school.

The incident was alleged to have taken place in a room at the school.
