Hadi, PAS leaders to attend Umno general assembly

The Islamist party’s secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan says being together at any programme will strengthen the bond between the two parties.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will be at Umno’s general assembly to be held on Saturday.
PETALING JAYA:
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang will attend the Umno general assembly on Saturday, a little over two months after the country’s two biggest Malay-Muslim parties formalised their political cooperation.

The Islamist party’s secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said its top-tier leader and state chiefs will also attend the Umno assembly.

“We are confident that being together in any programme will strengthen the understanding and work towards Muafakat Nasional,” he said in a statement, referring to the national unity charter.

Last year, several PAS leaders were spotted at Umno’s 72nd general assembly, including former PAS Youth chief Khalil Abdul Hadi and the women’s wing chief Dr Nuridah Mohd.

Top Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders also attended the opening of the PAS muktamar in Terengganu last year, the first since PAS quit the coalition in 1977. Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and MIC deputy president SK Devamany were present at the 64th annual congress.

In September, PAS and Umno signed a historic charter of political cooperation.

Zahid and other leaders from Umno and BN also showed up at a PAS ceramah in a historic first.
