Police have currently ruled out foul play in the death of the girl, whose identity has not been released.
City police chief Habibi Majinji said the body was found by the girl’s friends and the hostel warden at about 6.45pm.
Initial investigations found that the girl had been with four of her friends in a room of the hostel before that.
“Shortly after, the friends left but later they returned to call the girl for a study session,” he said when contacted.
“They found the door locked and felt something was amiss. They then sought help from the warden.”
They knocked but received no response. The warden then broke open the door, and they saw the body hanging from the ceiling.
Habibi said police are still looking into the cause of the incident which has been categorised as sudden death.
The body meanwhile has been sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post-mortem.
