Govt to further reduce face mask price after review

Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi says there is an adequate supply of face masks in the market.

The ceiling price of three-ply face masks is currently RM1.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi says the price of face masks will be reviewed at the end of September as manufacturers are producing an adequate supply.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, he said manufacturers are producing 1.5 million face masks each day with another four expected to begin operating in October.

“We will review either at the end of September or October to reduce the price from (the present) RM1 per piece.

“We hope industry players will take note of this and will not say that we didn’t give notice,” he said to Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah), who had asked for the price of face masks to be reduced in stages to prevent losses to manufacturers.

He also suggested that three-ply masks be sold at 50 to 60 sen each, and urged Putrajaya to reduce the price of children’s masks to lower than adults’.

However, Linggi said the price of children’s masks would remain the same as manufacturers still incurred costs despite the smaller size.

The ceiling price of three-ply face masks was reduced from RM1.20 to RM1 beginning Aug 15.
