Close schools in Klang, say MP and parent-teacher groups

Sixty four parent-teacher associations (PIBG) in Klang have appealed to the district education office to close the schools immediately.

Two secondary school students in Klang were reported to be down with Covid-19.
PETALING JAYA:
An opposition MP and 64 parent-teacher groups have called for schools in the Klang district to be closed following the surge of Covid-19 cases recently.

Klang MP Charles Santiago said the surge in cases has caused parents to be worried about the safety of their children.

The parents had become more anxious after two pupils at SMK Pandamaran Jaya, Klang, were reported to have come down with Covid-19, with several other students ordered to undergo quarantine.

He said 64 parent-teacher associations (PIBG) in Klang have appealed to the district education office to close the schools immediately to ensure the safety of the children, teachers and all school staff.

The health ministry reported 287 new Covid-19 cases today, the highest number of infections in a day since the pandemic began. All the new cases were local transmissions.

The health ministry said there were 31 new cases in Selangor, almost half of whom had a travel history to Sabah. Two new Covid-19 clusters have been detected in Seri Setia, Gombak, and Seri Anggerik, Hulu Selangor. Both clusters involved Malaysian men who had returned from Sabah.

No discussions yet on any lockdown in Selangor

Earlier today, the director-general of health, Noor Hisham Abdullah, said there had not been any discussions about a lockdown in Selangor with the rise in infection rates in the state.

He said the health ministry and the National Security Council had not discussed the matter.

Noor Hisham said control measures had been taken and he hoped the number of infections could be reduced. “If we can implement as we do in Kedah we can reduce the R-nought figure. Active action is being carried out in the area, ” he said.
