GEORGE TOWN:
A total of 39 inmates at the Penang remand prison have tested positive for Covid-19 after undergoing a third screening.

Prison director Mohamed Jusoh Ismail said the inmates’ two previous tests results were negative.

“However, they began showing symptoms and health ministry personnel conducted a third screening on them and (they) were confirmed (to be) Covid-19 positive.

“They are being treated at the low-risk ward in the prison and (are) reported to be stable,” he said.

He added that more than 200 inmates are now in the green zone for showing signs of recovery.

Seberang Perai prison director Zulkifli Abdul Manah said health personnel were conducting screening tests on inmates who have been in the prison for six months and longer to ensure the virus is not spreading among them.

Currently, there are two Covid-19 clusters in Penang: the remand prison cluster and Jawi prison cluster, all involving inmates. Both prisons are now in a state of lockdown.

As of yesterday, the remand prison cluster recorded 446 positive cases while the Jawi cluster recorded 95 cases.
