Total lockdown at Kota Kinabalu temporary detention centre

Senior minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob says the enhanced movement control order will begin on Nov 3.

The lockdown will involve 1,820 detainees and 114 staff working at the detention centre in Kota Kinabalu.
PETALING JAYA:
Senior minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced that the Kota Kinabalu temporary detention centre will be put under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO).

He said the lockdown will be implemented on Nov 3 for two weeks.

He added that the lockdown will involve 1,820 detainees and 114 staff working at the detention centre.

Ismail also announced that the EMCO implemented at Alor Star prison and prison quarters will end tomorrow, after screenings as by the health ministry found no new positive cases for the past one week.

Ismail said 261 detainees and staff at the Kota Kinabalu temporary detention centre were screened for Covid-19 as of Oct 30, with 56 detainees testing positive.

“A special meeting of the National Security Council (MKN) has listened to Sabah MKN’s proposal about the need to implement an EMCO at the Kota Kinabalu temporary detention centre,” said Ismail.

“To prevent the spread of Covid-19 among detainees and staff, the government has agreed to implement an EMCO at the Kota Kinabalu temporary detention centre from Nov 3 to Nov 16.”

The EMCO at the Alor Star prison and prison quarters started on Oct 5 and was originally scheduled to end on Oct 18 but was extended until Nov 1 due to the continued detection of new Covid-19 cases at the prison.

Ismail also said police arrested 485 individuals yesterday over movement control order-related offences. A total of 480 were issued compound fines while five others were remanded.

Most of the arrests, Ismail said, were for failing to wear face masks.

Among the other offences included activities at nightclubs and pubs, activities which made physical distancing difficult and failure to provide materials for contact tracing registration.

A total of 3,963 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 52,552 supermarkets, restaurants, hawkers, stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

Ismail also said police caught 41 illegal immigrants yesterday under Ops Benteng.

Regarding the mandatory home quarantine, Ismail said 59,061 people who arrived through KLIA were screened for Covid-19 from July 24 to Oct 31 and were placed under quarantine.

A total of 381 tested positive and were sent to hospital for treatment, while 48,645 have been allowed to return home.

Some 10,035 people are now undergoing mandatory quarantine.
